Shipping Human Remains

Requirements for Shipping Human Remains

The Government of Ethiopia has regulations for the transport of human remain to Ethiopia. The regulation requires the following documents to transport human remains to Ethiopia. Debit

1. Original Death Certificate

2. A letter from the funeral home showing (certificate)

  • Embalming by standard (Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Island) methods

  • Use of a hermetically sealed casket (certificate)

3. Non-contagious disease letters issued by the local health authority and/or other authorized health institutions (hospital).

4. Documents that can confirm Ethiopian nationality or Ethiopia organ like Ethiopian passport (old or new), birth certificate, identity card,

5. Certificate of registration or identification  (i.e. Personbevis (Sweden), Folkeregisteret (Denmark), Folkeregister (Norway), Extract from the Population Information System (Finland), Einstaklingar (Island))

Before they sent to the Embassy, the above documents (1-3) should be authenticated by the Foreign Ministry of the country where the documents are issued. 

If all of the requirements listed above are met, then the Embassy of Ethiopia in Stockholm will issue a permit for the shipment of the body. There is no fee associated with this.

If you are mailing your documents to the Embassy, please include a self-addressed envelope with sufficient pre-paid return postage.

From Sweden

  • Applicants must send (enclose) a pre-paid and a pre-addressed envelop with 65 SEK stamps up to 100 grams or 72 SEK stamps up to 250 grams or 83 SEK stamps up to 500 grams or 94 SEK stamps up to 1000 grms, to enable us to send back your documents by registered mail to your address. (write the full postal address of the receiver on the envelop).

From outside Sweden

  • Applicant form outside Sweden must enclose a pre-addressed envelop (write the full postal address of the receiver on the envelop) with 9 International coupons for the weight up to 100 grams or 11 International coupons for the weight up to 250 grams or 14 International coupons for the weight up to 500 grams, to enable us to send back your documents by registered mail to your address.
