How to apply for a
documentary Film Making
in Ethiopia
(NB.-
This procedure should also be applied
for video, audio or visual agencies;
for filming or reporting)
APPLICATION FOR FILMING DOCUMENTARIES IN ETHIOPIA
Foreigners wishing to shoot films in
Ethiopia shall submit their written application to the Ethiopian
Embassy in Stockholm to get business visa before their departure to
Ethiopia for filming or reporting purpose.
1. Application structure for film
shooting in Ethiopia
The application letter shall contain, among
other things:-

The name of the company,
producer of the Film: (Organization
name with
Contact
details)
-
The name and the passport number
of the filming crew,
-
The purpose and the title of the
film and duration of the shooting,
-
The production cost of the film
(who will cover the production cost?)
-
Name and telephone of the contact
person or organization in Ethiopia,
-
Any documentary made earlier by the applicant in Ethiopia:
If yes, details thereof (Attach separate sheet, if required):

Is the documentary/report for public broadcast? If so,
on which network/channel:
-
Place:
Date: and signature of the applicant
2. The applicant shall send the
following documents with the application letter:-
-
A copy of the film script along
with its synopsis for feature films or synopsis for the
documentary films

A list of equipment necessary
to be used, in 2
copies,
-
List/full details of crewmembers (names,
nationality,
telephone, address) and their passport copy,
Steps and
procedures of the application for filming
-
The completed application has to be sent, preferably by
e-mail or post, to the Embassy of Ethiopia in Stockholm by the applicant.

Upon receiving the application,
the Embassy would send application for filming
to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Ethiopia.

Up
on receiving confirmation for filming
Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the
Embassy should notify the applicant to apply for business visa.

Then the applicant should apply
for visa in Ethiopia Embassy, which in turn will issue
Journalist visa
(‘BV’)
to travel to Ethiopia for filming. Documentary filming is not permissible
on any other types of visas (e.g. tourist/ transit visas).

Upon issue of
the business visa, the Embassy shall facilitate for the import of
filming equipments of the applicant.

Upon arrival
in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the applicant should contact the the
Ministry of Information and pay a permit fee and thereby collect
a press
badge.
Notes:-
-
Crew members shall submit one
passport size photograph for the
press badge
at arrival in Addis Ababa.

Where the applicant wishes to
use an aircraft for shooting a film, s/he should obtain a flight
permit from the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority.

Requirement from the applicant:

One duly filled and signed
Visa application form
(PDF)
with one recent
passport size photograph (not
computer printout or scanned).

Original valid passport (at least for 6 months).

Formal
Letter of recommendation from the Institution/Organization/Enterprise
or a formal letter of invitation from Ethiopia
stating the purpose of travel.
Notes:-

Application for visa should be sent only after
permission for filming is obtained from the Ministry
of Foreign Affair of Ethiopia and upon the
notification of the Embassy.

Make
sure that the application form is fully completed. Failure
to do so may delay your visa.

It
is important to note, that applicant has made the
necessary payment for the service on time.

Incomplete visa request form or payment will not be
processed.

Visa fee has to be paid in advance by Plusgirot
No. 629247-8. Or those who come to the
Embassy can pay only in cash.

Regarding "visa fee" refer on the table below. If
you enclose a pre-addressed envelope you don't need
to pay postage fee.

the visa fee, the postal transfer charges and bank
transfer commission shall be paid in advance

NOTES: -
-
The visa is processed after the
money is appeared in the embassy account and this
would take up to 5 days. The mailing time takes
between 3 to 4 days for Sweden and 4 to 5 days for
other countries. Hence, it is advisable to send the
visa application at least 10 days a head of the
departure date upon receiving the notification for
filming permission from the Embassy.

Do
not send cash. We don't accept cheques, visa card
and other currencies. Cash (i.e. only Swedish kronoer)
is acceptable if the applicants or courier collects
the passport in person.
-
If
you transfer visa fee for one person or group of
people at a time then bank commission will be the
same (i.e. 60 SEK) but the postage fee would become
only 100SEK for the whole passport.

Attach your payment receipt (write the full postal
address of the receiver on the receipt).
-
Any amount of money paid in excess of
the required amount is not refundable.
