Meles says IGAD agrees to ensure sustainable peace in Sudan (March 10, 2010)

Prime Minister Meles Zenawi said the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has agreed to ensure sustainable peace in Sudan.

Meles was speaking on Tuesday at the closing of the 14th Extraordinary Summit of the IGAD on the Sudan Peace Process held in Nairobi, Kenya.

The Premier, who is also current Chairperson of IGAD, said IGAD would provide full support to the implementation of the Sudanese Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA).

 

 

 

Meles said the parties, which signed the agreement, play crucial role in the implementation of the agreement. IGAD should also play key role to the same purpose.

He said foreign affairs ministers of IGAD member countries have diplomatic responsibility to enable all parties to establish common belief. More

 

Government women's policy, strategy paying off: President Girma (March 7, 2010)

 

President Girma Woldegiorgis said remarkable achievements have been registered in a very short time as the government ensures the participation and benefits of women.

Meles holds talks with visiting US official (March 4, 2010)

 

Prime Minister, Meles Zenawi received and held discussion on March 4, 2010 with United State’s Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Bureau, Karl Wycoff.

After receiving the visiting US official at his office, Meles held fruitful discussion with Karl Wycoff as to how to bolster bilateral relations between the two countries, especially in political, security, and economic sectors.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The two parties also shared ideas on the current crisis in Somalia, Darfur region, and on other regional and international issues of common interest, according to a senior government official who attended the discussion.

 

Pan African Chamber of Commerce and Industry Signs Agreement With Ethiopia (March 1, 2010)

 

The Pan African Chamber of Commerce and Industry President, Sipho Meseleku signed in Addis Ababa on March 1, 2010 an agreement that enabled it receive legal recognition with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Foreign Affairs State Minister, Dr. Tekeda Alemu and Pan African Chamber of Commerce and Industry President, Sipho Meseleku signed the agreement.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Tekeda said the decision made by Pan African Chamber of Commerce and Industry to make Addis Ababa as its seat was a correct decision. More

 

International Course for African Universities Deans kicked off (March 1, 2010)

 

The International Dean’s Course for Africa universities that aims at enhancing the capacity of leaders of higher learning institutions kicked off in Addis Ababa on March 1, 2010.

The training co-organized by the Addis Ababa University and German government attracted participants from Ethiopia, Sudan, Kenya, Ghana, Uganda, Malawi, Nigeria, Tanzania and Cameroon.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Addressing the training AAU president Prof, Endrias Eshete said the training would enhance the capacity of leaders of higher learning institutions.

The training is timely as capable leaders are in need of the ever expansion of high learning institutions in Ethiopia.

 

International Institute for Capacity Building for Africa to be constructed in Addis Ababa (February 23, 2010)

 

Education Minister Demeke Mekonnen and UNESCO Director General, Irina Bokova in Addis Ababa laid foundation stone for construction of International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa.

Demeke on the occasion said the institute will be used to implement various programs including capacity building for teachers in African countries.

 

 

 

 

 

 

The minister said the institute will be constructed here as Ethiopia has registered commendable results in the efforts to achieve UNESCO's six goals.

Addis Ababa's being seat for the African Union and various diplomats is the other factor to construct the institute in Ethiopia.

 

Prime Minister Meles Zenawi elected to chair a high-level panel with UK Prime Minister to spur action on climate change  (12 February 2010)

 

 

Prime Minister Meles of Ethiopia and Prime Minister Gordon Brown of UK will head up a new high-level Advisory Group launched by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on February 12, 2010.

 

 

 

 

 

The Advisory Group is intended to mobilize financing swiftly to help developing countries combat climate change according to the Copenhagen Accord reached at December’s United Nations conference.

“There will be an even balance between developing and developed countries” in the new Advisory Group on Climate Change Financing, chaired by Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi and UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Mr. Ban announced in New York.

The body’s other members, who will be appointed for 10 months; include President Bharrat Jagdeo of Guyana and Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg of Norway, senior ministers and officials from central banks and experts on finance and development, according to a statement issued by his spokesperson.

 

The 14th Ordinary Summit of the African Union nominates Meles as AU Chief Negotiator at global climate conferences (February 2, 2010)

 

The 14th AU Summit unanimously nominated again Prime Minister Meles Zenawi to represent Africa in international fora in the coming consecutive global climate conferences.

The Summit commended the leading role of PM Meles at Copenhagen Climate Conference where there was hard time to negotiate with many stakeholders. PM Meles presented a report on the negotiation and outcome of the Copenhagen Climate Conference to the AU Summit on Monday.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The African leaders have expressed their appreciation to Meles for his outstanding contribution he made to maintain and further the benefits and interests of the Africa. More

The 14th Ordinary Summit of the African Union heads of state and government opened at the United Nations Conference Center (UNCC) in Addis Ababa on 31 January 2010. The Summit will be held for three days from January 31, 2010 to February 02, 2010 with a theme “Information and Communication Technologies in Africa: Prospects and Challenges for Development”.

Somali Regional State awarded Certificate of Recognition to the Ethiopian Embassy in Stockholm (February 16, 2010)

The Somali Regional State of Ethiopia awarded Certificate of Recognition to the Ethiopian Embassy in Stockholm for its valuable contributions for the attainment of good governance and development activities in the Somali region.

The Certificate of Recognition had been handed over to the Ethiopian Ambassador to the Scandinavian Countries, H.E. Dina Mufti, by representatives of the Somali community in Stockholm at the Ethiopian Embassy in Stockholm on February 16, 2010 together with traditional clothes of the people of the Somali Region.

During the occasion, Ambassador Dina said that the Embassy has been working and will continue to work with Ethiopian communities from the region who are living in the Scandinavian countries to participate the development endeavours of the region.

The community leaders also exchanged ideas with the Ambassador on the ways to work closely for further and greater attainment. 

 

 

Staff of The Embassy  and Ethiopians in the Scandinavian countries Express Condolences over Tragic Plane Accident (January 27, 2010)

Staffs of the Ethiopian Embassy in Stockholm and Ethiopians living in Sweden, Finland Norway and Denmark expressed their condolences over the tragic accident of the Ethiopian Airlines' plane which crashed into Mediterranean Sea minutes after take off from Beirut Airport on Monday.

According a press statement sent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by the Ethiopian Embassy in Stockholm, Employees of the Embassy in Stockholm, the Ethiopian consulate in Finland as well as Ethiopians in Finland, Denmark Norway and Sweden expressed their heart-felt sorrow and deepest sympathy over the accident. They also conveyed their condolences to the families of the bereaved, workers of the Ethiopian airlines and to the Ethiopian peoples.

 

Ethiopia participated on the Matka 2010 International tourism Fair (January 25, 2010)

Ethiopia has participated on the Matka 2010 International Tourism Fair that held in Helsinki, Finland from 21 to 24 January 2010. The Ethiopian Consulate in Finland is participated on the fair to promote Ethiopia as tourist destination and as the homeland of world finest Coffee Arabica.

During the fair brochures and cooked Ethiopia organic coffee were served for the spectators for free at Ethiopian stand. Discussion is also held with potential peoples and various group leaders, such as the motorist group, the coffee group, the runner group, the cultural group, the safari group and the historical group, to arrange group trips to Ethiopia in 2010 according to Mr. Elias Sabure the organizer of the Ethiopian stand.

On the Matka International Tourism Fair more than 2000 local exhibitors and 78 Foreign Government Representatives have participated and more than 95 000 people visited the event.

 

Ethiopian Community Congratulates Prime Minister Meles Zenawi (December 20, 2009)

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Members of Ethiopian community residing in Copenhagen, Denmark congratulated Prime Minister Meles Zenawi of Ethiopia for his successful contribution and achievements in the UN climate change conference.

 

 On the occasion held on 18, 2009, members of the community presented two gifts to the Prime Minister for his immense contributions to both Ethiopia and Africa.

 

 

 

 

 

In a message read out by their representative, member of the community highlighted the achievements Ethiopia has made over the last few years with the leadership of the Prime Minister. “Without the dedicated service and your personal leadership skill, the developments in Ethiopia wouldn’t be what it is today. Prime Minister Meles, we express our heartfelt gratitude to you and to the government of Ethiopia for your achievements in sustainable development. We also express our appreciation to the roles you have been playing in promoting African’s position and interests in different international forums including G8, G20 and now here in copenhagen. We are proud of you and your immense leadership skills and great wisdom to the transformation of Ethiopia,” the message stated.
