Star Alliance
unanimously approves Ethiopian to join

Star
Alliance Chief Executive Board (CEB) has unanimously
approved the Ethiopian Airlines to join the Star Alliance
members Carrier. |
In a press
conference, Star Alliance said the CEB is pleased to invite
Ethiopian Airlines to join the Star Alliance network.
CEB said in the
future the Star Alliance will have three main hubs in Africa-Addis
Ababa, Cairo and Johannesburg- that allows for an ideal access to
the continent from either the North, Centre-East or South’’.
Ethiopia has launched the
construction of a 5,000 Km railway complex

Ethiopia
has launched the construction of a 5,000 Km railway complex,
which is aims to link the capital, Addis Ababa, to various
regions of the country, Ethiopian Railway Corporation (ERC)
disclosed. Officially launching the major railroad project,
stretching out in eight directions across the country. |
The first phase of
construction will be the construction of five railway tracks, which
will create job opportunities for over 300,000 citizens nationwide,
and will cost the nation an estimated 6 billion Birr (US$336
million) annually.

In
addition, the Addis Ababa light train project will open
employment opportunity to 5,000 citizens. The corporation
said that 18 Ethiopian consultant groups will take part in
the construction of the railway project. |
The Railway project is part of the country’s
five-year transformation plan, designed the government along with
the unpredicted expansion of infrastructure, and a boost to 10,000MW
of country’s power production from the current, which stands at
about 2,000MW.

To Invite Ethiopia, Malawi, Singapore, Spain, Vietnam To G-20 Summit

South Korea, the host of this year's
second summit of Group of 20 leading nations, decided to invite non
members Ethiopia, Malawi, Singapore, Spain and Vietnam to Seoul in
November, the Presidential Committee for the G-20 summit said
Friday.
Addis to host 15th International
Trade Fair

Addis
Ababa Chamber of Commerce and Sectoral Associations (AACCSA)
said the 15th Addis Chamber International Trade Fair will be
held at the Addis Ababa Exhibition Center in February 2011.
The
aim of the trade fair is to promote investment opportunities
in the country. |
The Trade Fair
will be held under the theme "Women Entrepreneurship for
Development" from 10 February 2011.
A total of 300
companies are expected to participate in the Trade Fair of which 150
of the participants are foreign companies drawn from 25 countries.

PM Meles was invited to speak at
Columbia University on the current economic issues around the globe.
The prime minister has been a highly sought after speaker when it
comes to the environment and economics.
As a prime
minister of Ethiopia he has led the country to a double-digit
economic growth for the past 7 years. He has been a staunch advocate
for limited state involvement in the market to the dismay of the
Washington consensus group. His yet to be published work on the
failures of neo-liberalist approach to Africa’s economic woes is
highly anticipated.
Somali Regional State awarded Certificate of Recognition to the
Ethiopian Embassy in Stockholm

The Somali Regional State of Ethiopia awarded Certificate of
Recognition to the Ethiopian Embassy in Stockholm for its valuable
contributions for the attainment of good governance and development
activities in the Somali region.
The Certificate of Recognition had been handed over to the Ethiopian
Ambassador to the Scandinavian Countries, H.E. Dina Mufti, by
representatives of the Somali community in Stockholm at the
Ethiopian Embassy in Stockholm on February 16, 2010 together with
traditional clothes of the people of the Somali Region.
During the
occasion, Ambassador Dina said that the Embassy has been working and
will continue to work with Ethiopian communities from the region who
are living in the Scandinavian countries to participate the
development endeavours of the region.
The community
leaders also exchanged ideas with the Ambassador on the ways to work
closely for further and greater attainment.

Group launched by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on February

The Advisory Group is intended to mobilize financing swiftly to help
developing countries combat climate change according to the
Copenhagen Accord reached at December’s United Nations conference.
“There will be an
even balance between developing and developed countries” in the new
Advisory Group on Climate Change Financing, chaired by Ethiopian
Prime Minister Meles Zenawi and UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Mr.
Ban
announced
in New York.
The body’s other
members, who will be appointed for 10 months; include President
Bharrat Jagdeo of Guyana and Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg of
Norway, senior ministers and officials from central banks and
experts on finance and development, according to a
statement
issued by his spokesperson.

Norwegian Co. sign accord to
conduct feasibility study on hydro-electric projects
(July 20, 2010)
The Ministry of Water Resource and Halcrow Group Ltd, a
Norwegian company signed on an agreement to conduct a feasibility
study on Mandaya and Beko-Abo multi-purpose hydroelectric projects
to be built on river Nile.
The multi-purpose
hydroelectric projects have the capacity to generate over 4,100 MW
electric power.
The
Ethiopians in Sweden
colourfully celebrated the 19th Anniversary of May 20: -
  
During the celebration
held at the residence of the ambassador, Ethiopian Ambassador to the
Scandinavian Countries H.E Dina Mufti after welcoming the members of the
community and invited guests elaborated on the achievements of Ethiopia by
way of democratizing the nation and registering encouraging socio economic
progress.
He made a call on
Ethiopians to step up their efforts of contribution to the further
democratization and development of their county of origin i.e. Ethiopia.
  
During the occasion four
individuals of Ethiopians and Ethiopian origins were recognized and given
awards for their extraordinary efforts in informing and motivating the
Diaspora Ethiopians about their country of origin to actively participate in the socioeconomic development
of the country. There were Mr. Tadesse Gebregziaber from Sweden, Mr. Zewdu
Teklu and Mr. Tesfalem Haile from Denmark and Mr. Elias Saboure from
Finland. Ambassador Dina handed over the awards to the individuals.
Similarly awards were also
given to High school graduates of the Ethiopian family for their successful completion of their education. Madam Lina, the spouse of the Ambassador handed
over the awards to the graduates.
Network for
Peace in the Horn of Africa, a Civic Organization residing in
Stockholm, has awarded a Peace Diploma 2010 to Ethiopian Ambassador
to the Scandinavian countries, H.E Ambassador Dina Mufti,

The Organization has organized a
conference entitled ”Democratization in the Horn of Africa
Processes and Results” from 28 –29, 2010 in Stockholm with a vision
to see a new horn Africa that is peaceful, reconciled, democratic
and that has good governance.
On the conference, H.E Ambassador Dina
has delivered a speech on Ethiopian National Election of 2010 and the Democratization
process in Ethiopia in particular and in the Horn of Africa in
general.
Scholars from Ethiopia, Sudan, Djibouti,
Somalia and Eritrea have also presented different study papers on
different topics mainly on peace, development and
democratization process in the horn of African countries.
At the end of the conference the Organization awarded the Peace
Diploma.
African Missions in Stockholm marks Africa Day
(May 26,

African Diplomatic Missions residing in
Stockholm marked Africa Day on 25, 2010 with a call for renewed
efforts to intensify the development of Information and
Communication Technology in Africa and achieve the objective of a
greater access and circulation of knowledge, as well as the creation
of new knowledge and its use.

Delegation led by Seyoum visits Finland, Norway (April

A
delegation led by Foreign Affairs Minister Seyoum Mesfin
held a working visit to Finland and Norway.
During
its visit to Finland and Norway, the delegation discussed
with higher-level officials, members of parliament and the
business community in the respective countries on ways to
further strengthen existing relations between Ethiopia and
the stated countries. |
Accordingly, Seyoum held talks with his Finnish counterpart Alexander
Stubb and senior government authorities in the country including
Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Paavo Väyryen and the
Foreign Minister’s Special Representative to Africa, MP Pekka
Haavisto on issues related to bilateral relations and international
affairs.
Similarly, the delegation held talks with Foreign Affairs Minsiter of
Norway, jonas Gahr Store,
State Minister of the Environment and International Development
Ms. Ingrid Fiskaa
and other senior
government officials on ways to enhance existing bilateral relations
between Ethiopia and Norway.
The delegation also exchanged views with officials of the foreign
policy institute, research institutes and company managers in
Norway, among others.
The Foreign
Affairs Minister Seyoum said during the discussion that Ethiopia is
one of the few African countries expected to meet the MDGs.
Ethiopia participated on the Matka 2010 International tourism Fair
(January
25, 2010)
Ethiopia has
participated on the Matka 2010 International Tourism Fair that held
in Helsinki, Finland from 21 to 24 January 2010. The Ethiopian
Consulate in Finland is participated on the fair to promote Ethiopia
as tourist destination and as the homeland of world finest Coffee
Arabica.

During the fair brochures and cooked Ethiopia organic
coffee were served for the spectators for free at Ethiopian stand.
Discussion is also held with potential peoples and various group
leaders, such as the motorist group, the coffee group, the runner
group, the cultural group, the safari group and the
historical group, to arrange group trips to Ethiopia in 2010
according to Mr. Elias Sabure the organizer of the Ethiopian stand.
On the Matka International Tourism Fair more than 2000
local exhibitors and 78 Foreign Government Representatives have
participated and more than 95 000 people visited the event.
